Grievance Procedure

All requests for accommodations through the Disability Access Office (DAO) are considered on an individualized basis, with determinations made first at the local level by professional staff who conduct an interactive process with the students. The process for managing student appeals and grievances related to accommodation denials is outlined below.

  1. DAO will provide you with a written notice of why a requested accommodation was not approved.  Alternative accommodations may be offered for you to consider.
  1. Should you wish to appeal the decision(s), complete this form for review by the Associate Dean of the Disability Access Office.

  • The form must be completed by you, the student. DAO does not accept appeal forms completed by parents, clinicians, or other third parties.
  • Substantially new information should be made available.
  • New or additional clinical documentation should be emailed to dao@fas.harvard.edu if relevant to the appeal.

  • To the extent relevant, we may request additional clinical documentation, and/or consultation with university officials who can further inform the determination.

3. After the appeal is reviewed, the Associate Dean of DAO will share the decision in writing to you.

  • If the above does not produce agreement, you may appeal in writing to University Disability Resources, who has responsibility for ensuring that the University’s policies and procedures comply with Federal, State and University requirements. Please see the UDR Grievance Process.
